ECHO Center for Juvenile Justice and the Department of Entomology, University of Agricultural Sciences, GKVK, Bengaluru, conducted an interactive vermicomposting training for 40 children at the Remodelled ECHO Special Home in Summanahalli. The session was led by Dr. Ravi Kiran. K, Assistant Professor, UAS, who explained how to turn everyday organic waste into rich compost using earthworms. The children learned about different types of composting worms, how to set up a compost pit, and the steps involved in managing it. The training aimed to give the children useful skills that can help them earn a living in the future and support their rehabilitation journey.
The highlight of the training was the practical demonstration where the children participated in preparing a compost pit and learned firsthand about the conditions necessary for vermicompost production. While the initial attempt saw challenges with worm survival, the resource person used it as a learning moment to explain the importance of properly treating organic waste before use. This immersive experience gave the children a sense of joy in learning by doing, and most importantly, served as a meaningful step in their rehabilitation journey by turning a simple compost pit into a space where the children could learn and grow for a better future.
